The museum was opened in 1916 and is based on the collection of Professor Boris Polenov.
The exposition consists of several sections:
— Paleontology — paleozoology, paleobotany; historical geology — Precambrian, Paleozoic, Mesozoic, Cenozoic.
— A lithological and paleoecological collection: facies of continental, transitional and marine sediments as well as indicators of depth and surface layers.
— General geology (educational collection): layers of stratotype subdivision of the Phanerozoic, holotypes and topotypes of fossils, original author collections and archives.
Here you can examine specimens such as a Devonian armored fish from the Baltic Sea, an egg of a dinosaur from the Cretaceous deposits of Mongolia, the skulls of labyrinthodontias from the Volga region, Mesozoic fishes from Kazakhstan, non-skeletal Vendian fauna from the Arkhangelsk region and more.
