In 1916, along with the Department of Zoology and Comparative Anatomy, professors D. Fedotov and his assistant D. Diakonov organized a cabinet of zoology, which later became a museum. The collection developed out of the Feodotov’s research trip to Japan in 1917. There, at the biological station Misaki, sponges, ciliated and polychaete worms, nemerty, mollusks, crustaceans, echinoderms and other species were sampled. The most remarkable objects are the gigantic spider-crab Macrocheira kaempferi and the ‘living fossil’ king krab Tachypleus tridentatus. The later collection was expanded with samples of mollusks by Professor V. Beklemishev, as well as beetles and butterflies by Professor D. Kharitonov. The exposition grows continuously with contributions of students and graduates of the university.
